Old field succession represents the progression from abandoned agricultural fields or grassland thru a series of seres as documented for over half a century beginning with Katherine Keever and others since the 1950s.
In some cases this progression can become halted as a shrub state community for several decades. They occur on all hydrologies from xeric through mesic and hydric ecotones, and most all geologies throughout the region.
