Heathland complexes are often overlooked and are part of forest types, grassland types, wetland types and mountain balds.
Healthland species composition includes blueberries, huckleberries, chokeberry, bayberry, sweet fern, diminutive bunch grasses, lichens and mosses and coniferous trees like pitch pine, red spruce and firs. They are always on acidic soils or very shallow substrates.
