Fens are defined and supported by constant or periodic groundwater upwelling.
Contrastingly, true bogs are supported only by ombrotrophic (airborne) hydrology. Both ecosystems occur throughout the region, from Coastal Plain physiographies to Alleghany Mountain and Piedmont locales.
