Since the 1970’s the great diversity of wetlands has been recognized, described and regulated.
Their diversity of hydrologies and vegetative communities has been described by the US Fish & Wildlife Service (Cowardin et al.), the US Department of Agriculture and US Army Corps of Engineers. Wetland hydrologies range from short duration ponding or saturation to permanently flooded regimes. The few photos below illustrate both tidal and non-tidal wetland mosaics.
