Hamamelis virginiana – Common Witch Hazel

Common Witch Hazel is a small, deciduous tree, with an adult height of 18’, growing with a multistemmed habit, and is also a plant you should consider incorporating into your landscape. The distinctive yellow flowers—composed of four thin ribbon-shaped petals, four short stamens, and a four-parted calyx at the base—are the last flowers to bloom during autumn, and bring a welcome touch of sunny color to the landscape long after all the other trees have stopped flowering. Interestingly, the fruit takes a year to mature after pollination, at which point it splits explosively, sending two shiny black seeds up to 30’ away from the plant.
Witch-hazel is a very low-maintenance plant, with few pests or diseases. It prefers moist, organically rich soils with full sun to partial shade. Planting it in the full sun will result in the best flowering. It can tolerate heavy clay soils as well. Little pruning is required, but if you want to contain it to an area, remove any suckers that grow up around the base of the plant.
Witch-hazel is most commonly associated with the astringent of the same name, which is extracted from Hamamelis virginiana bark. Native Americans used a decoction of witch-hazel to treat swellings, tumors, and inflammations, and in modern medicine, tannins called hamamelitannins extracted from witch-hazel have been shown to be cytotoxic to colon cancer cells.
Its scientific name (Hamamelis) means “hama” (at the same time) “melis” (fruit), referring to how the flowers and fruit can be seen on the same branch at the same time, and its specific epithet (virginiana) refers to how it is native to Virginia, amongst other places in Eastern North America, from central Florida to Nova Scotia.
For those who like standing out, Hamamelis virginiana is a natural choice!
